World Leaders Congratulate Trump, Eye Stronger Alliances

As Donald Trump claimed victory in the U.S. presidential election on Wednesday morning, leaders around the world quickly responded, offering their congratulations and voicing intentions to work with his administration.

French President Emmanuel Macron was among the first to congratulate "President Donald Trump," expressing his readiness to work with the frontrunner "with respect and ambition," as they had successfully done for four years. In a post on X, Macron affirmed that their relationship would "take account of your convictions, and mine," adding, "For more peace and prosperity."

Highlighting the importance of self-reliance, the French government spokeswoman remarked that Europe must be prepared to shape its own destiny. "We must not ask ourselves what the United States will do, but what Europe is capable of doing," said Maud Bregeon on RTL, listing defense, industrial recovery, and decarbonization as areas where Europe must assume responsibility.

Germany's foreign minister also congratulated Trump, pledging that Germany would remain "a close and reliable ally for the future American government." Meanwhile, Spain’s left-wing Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez echoed support for a strong transatlantic partnership, tweeting, "Congratulations @realDonaldTrump on your victory and your election as 47th President of the US. We will work on our strategic bilateral relations and on a strong transatlantic partnership."

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, known for her far-right stance, highlighted the "unshakeable" ties between the U.S. and Italy, calling them "sister" nations bound by "an unshakeable alliance, common values, and a historic friendship." She added on X, "It is a strategic bond which I am sure we will now strengthen even more."

“Greatest comeback”

In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed Trump’s win as a "powerful recommitment" to the U.S.-Israel alliance, declaring, "Congratulations on history’s greatest comeback! Your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America. This is a huge victory!"

National israeli Unity chief Benny Gantz hailed Donald Trump “a true friend of Israel” in an tweet.“Throughout his former tenure, he brokered the Abraham Accords, officially recognised the Golan Heights as part of Israel, and moved the US Embassy to Jerusalem,” he said.

Mark Rutte, the NATO chief, also extended congratulations, stating that Trump’s return would "help keep the alliance strong." He emphasized, "His leadership will again be key to keeping our Alliance strong. I look forward to working with him again to advance peace through strength through NATO."

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer celebrated Trump’s "historic election victory," underscoring the resilience of the UK-U.S. special relationship. "As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise," he said, predicting that the partnership would "continue to prosper on both sides of the Atlantic for years to come."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky applauded Trump’s "impressive victory" and expressed hope that his presidency would help bring "just peace in Ukraine closer." He noted, "I appreciate President Trump's commitment to the 'peace through strength' approach in global affairs. This is exactly the principle that can practically bring just peace in Ukraine closer."

Similarly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Trump on his "historic election victory" and expressed enthusiasm about working with him. "Heartiest congratulations my friend @realDonaldTrump on your historic election victory," Modi posted on social media. "As you build on the successes of your previous term, I look forward to renewing our collaboration."

"Peaceful coexistence"

China, meanwhile, expressed hopes for "peaceful coexistence" with the U.S., with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stating, "We will continue to approach and handle China-U.S. relations based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation."

Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani congratulated Trump, looking forward to "working together again... in promoting security and stability both in the region and globally." The Gulf leader, known for his role in mediating a Gaza truce, emphasized cooperation in both regional and global security.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi expressed hope that Trump’s return to the White House could help bring peace to the Middle East.  "I wish him all the success... and I look forward to reaching peace together, upholding regional stability and strengthening the strategic partnership between Egypt and the United States and their friendly peoples," Sisi said on X.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, referring to Trump as "my friend," expressed optimism about strengthening U.S.-Turkey relations and addressing ongoing crises. "I hope Turkey-U.S. relations will strengthen, that regional and global crises and wars, especially the Palestinian issue and the Russia-Ukraine war, will come to an end," Erdogan posted on X.

S. Korea's President Yoon congratulates Trump, hopes for 'brighter' alliance.

Kremlin says Putin does not plan to congratulate Trump, and added that Russia will judge Trump presidency on 'concrete steps'. 

Iranians' livelihoods will not be affected by the U.S. elections, government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani was reported as saying on Wednesday after Donald Trump victory.

Jordan’s King Abdullah is the latest world leader to congratulate Donald Trump on his apparent election win. “Looking forward to working with you again to bolster Jordan’s longstanding partnership with the United States, in service of regional and global peace and stability for all,” writes the king on X.
