The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is to provide Lebanon with humanitarian aid worth over $67 million. This contribution will be allocated to the country's neediest populations, through the United Nations World Food Program (WFP).
It will benefit some 500,000 people, including some 200,000 Lebanese, by providing monthly food parcels to households, as stated by the US Embassy in Beirut in a press release issued on Wednesday. Since 2023, USAID has provided nearly $157 million in humanitarian funding to WFP and non-governmental organizations in Lebanon. With this contribution, USAID's partners (International Medical Corps and Relief International) will also continue to support more than 141,000 people in 13 medical clinics and provide home-based healthcare to patients who cannot access clinics.
"The prolonged economic, financial and humanitarian crises in Lebanon have led to acute levels of food insecurity and critical healthcare needs across the country," read the statement.
"The regional impact of the ongoing crisis in Gaza has further exacerbated these needs, especially as insecurity in southern Lebanon has prompted USAID partners to mobilize existing resources to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of more than 91,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) since October 2023," continues the US Embassy in its statement.
It also called on other donors to "join us in intensifying our efforts to prevent further deterioration of the situation in Lebanon."
