Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati received former Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) leader Walid Joumblatt at his residence on Monday evening. The latest developments on the local scene and in the Palestinian territories were at the heart of the discussions.
This visit is part of the "constant relations" and "dialogue that has never been broken off" between the two men, a source close to Joumblatt told This is Beirut.
It's also a way of revitalizing institutions. "We're not going to let the government die while we wait for the election of a president," he also explained. He added that "points of convergence" had brought Mikati and Joumblatt together, including the appointment of General Hassan Audi to the post of Army Chief of Staff by the Council of Ministers on Thursday, February 8, following his promotion from the rank of colonel to that of general.
