Walid Joumblatt, the former leader of the Progressive Socialist Party, visited Moscow on Friday to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the Special Representative of the President of Russia for the Middle East and Africa, Mikhail Bogdanov.
The discussion centered on regional and international affairs, particularly in the wake of heightened tensions in Lebanon following the Gaza war.
According to a statement issued by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lavrov “firmly rejected any further escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and cautioned against the involvement of other countries in the region, especially Lebanon.”
The Foreign Minister reiterated “Russia’s unwavering support for the sovereignty and unity of the Lebanese Republic, emphasizing the importance of preserving the integrity of its territory.”
Joumblatt and Lavrov underscored the necessity for the Lebanese people “to swiftly address pressing issues on the national agenda through mutual agreement and without external interference.”
They also highlighted the significance of “continuing the gradual development of the traditional, multi-dimensional and friendly relations between Russia and Lebanon.”
