Yemen's capital Sanaa, which is controlled by Houthis, was hit by a series of air strikes late Saturday, the group's television channel announced, blaming the United States and the United Kingdom. This comes after a series of strikes by the US targeting Iran-supported groups in Syria and Iraq.

A joint US and UK statement said that 36 strikes on 13 sites have been carried out, hitting underground sites, military defense systems, and a radar.

"US and British strikes targeted sectors in the south of the capital," Al-Massirah television said, as witnesses reported major blasts in the city.

According to the AP news agency, fighter jets took off from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier to bomb positions in Yemen, in addition to the use of Tomahawk missiles.

Houthi-affiliated media, the Saba Agency, has said that US and UK strikes have hit the governates of Dhamar, Hajjah, Sanaa, and al-Bayda.

In addition, Reuters, quoting two anonymous US officials, has published a report stating that the targets struck in Yemen were “Iran-linked”. Reuters says that these strikes appear to be part of the US’s ongoing retaliation against Iran-supported groups, which the US blames for drone attacks that killed three of its personnel in Jordan last week.

Yesterday, the US struck 85 targets in Syria and Iraq that it says belonged to Kataib Hezbollah, the militia which claimed responsibility for the attack in Jordan.

At least 16 people in Iraq were killed in yesterday’s strikes, the Iraqi government said as it condemned the “new aggression against” its sovereignty and warned of dire consequences in the region.
