Leader of the Kataeb party Samy Gemayel insisted on Thursday on the need to form a broad coalition dedicated to confronting Hezbollah.
"The Kataeb party has been working for more than five months to convince opposition partners, as well as certain other figures and allied parties, to form a broad coalition that would include all those who call for Lebanon's sovereignty and independence," he said in an interview with Al-Hadath.
Gemayel had already launched this initiative last September at a party meeting in Bikfaya, when he called for the formation of a coalition against "the hegemony of illegal weapons."
He explained that recent developments had helped to raise awareness of the need to create such a broad-based gathering. In his view, this coalition should not only include MPs but also "political, intellectual and cultural groups and figures, as well as journalists from all communities and regions, so that our voice can become broader and stronger." In this way, "The approach would be more effective and more global," Gemayel affirmed.
He expressed optimism about the consultations that the Kataeb is pursuing with the aim of setting up this coalition and "transforming it into a political reality capable of changing any internal equation in Lebanon."
