- #HumanRightsDay, US Embassy in Beirut Underlines Attacks on Journalists
On Human Rights Day and the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, the US embassy in Beirut underlined the “inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family.”
In a message splashed on its X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, the embassy specifically highlighted “the importance of the freedom of the press,” which it said “is fundamental to a free society and whose freedoms are enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”
In the context of ongoing violence on the border between Lebanon and Israel, the tweet read: “With violence that we have said must stop to protect civilians on both sides of the border and to avoid escalation, these principles take on even greater significance.”
The statement recalled the comment made by Secretary of State Antony Blinken in response to the October 13 killing of Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah, in which he called for a thorough investigation into the incident.
