Lebanese Forces (LF) leader Samir Geagea stated on Monday that he is still waiting for Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to convene a parliamentary meeting to prevent the risk of a leadership vacuum at the helm of the army. This potential vacuum arises from the scheduled retirement of the army’s Commander-in-Chief, General Joseph Aoun, on January 10.
“Today is December 4. We are still waiting for President Nabih Berri to convene the House, as he promised to prevent destabilization, a leadership vacuum or, God forbid, chaos within the military institution,” he wrote on his X platform account.
The LF parliamentary bloc submitted a bill on October 31, suggesting a one-year extension for the retirement of the army’s Commander-in-Chief. Following this, a delegation from the LF bloc approached Berri, urging him to call for a legislative session, a commitment he had previously made.
In an interview on November 30, Berri reiterated his intention to hold a legislative session before December 15 to deliberate on various bills and proposed laws, “including the one concerning the one-year extension of the generals’ term of office.”
