United States National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan stated that the risk of further escalation on the Lebanese-Israeli front is “acute” following the killing of senior Hezbollah leaders and the detonation of communication devices across Lebanon.
But he suggested that the widescale attacks might actually dampen increasing tensions in the Middle East.
“While the risk of escalation is real, we actually believe there is also a distinct avenue to getting to a cessation of hostilities and a durable solution that makes people on both sides of the border feel secure,” Sullivan told reporters.
When asked about the strike in Beirut, Sullivan commented that the attack has a “good outcome when people are brought to justice.”
The detonation of walkie-talkies and pagers of Hezbollah operatives this week led to the killing of at least 39 and the injury of roughly 3000 people. Israel has been generally blamed for the attack but has not taken official responsibility for the brazen attacks.
