Head of Beirut Civil Defense Department Walid Hashash was released on Friday after being detained by the Syrian authorities.

Hashash was taking part in a physical activity along the Syrian-Lebanese border. Upon crossing the border, Hashash was stopped at a security checkpoint and taken in for questioning and further clarifications. He spent one night in detention and was released after the mediation of Lebanese authorities to determine his fate and secure his release. He returned to Beirut after the situation was resolved.

Hashash clarified the reason for his detainment, stating “it was related to an old report filed by an individual with personal motives.” The investigation revealed that this individual had sent a false report accusing Hashash of taking part in the 7 May 2008 armed clashes.
