International reactions poured in on Friday after a New York jury found Donald Trump guilty of falsifying business documents to conceal a hush money payment to a porn star, making him the first former US president to be convicted of a crime.

On Friday, the Kremlin denounced the “elimination of political opponents” in the United States. “An elimination of political opponents is underway by all possible legal and illegal means, that’s obvious,” Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, leader of the far-right League, expressed his “full support” on Friday for Donald Trump, who was found guilty at his criminal trial in New York, a victim, he said, of “judicial harassment and a trial of a political nature.”

Keir Starmer, leader of the British opposition Labour Party, sounded a different note, “First of all, we respect the court’s decision in the Trump case. It remains to be sentenced and appealed, but we respect the judicial process.”
