The United States has introduced a fresh draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council featuring some of the sternest language on its behalf. The resolution proposes a temporary ceasefire and asserts that an Israeli attack on Rafah under present conditions would carry “significant implications” for regional security.

The United States has proposed a new draft resolution before the United Nations Security Council, including some of the harshest language issued by Washington so far. The draft resolution calls for a temporary ceasefire and states that an Israeli assault on Rafah under the current circumstances would have “serious implications” over regional security.

This US measure “is significant because Israel did not want the word ‘ceasefire’ in any resolution, and now it’s the US that’s proposing it,” Al Jazeera diplomatic correspondent James Bays reported from UN headquarters in New York City.

“Of course, other countries wanted the words ‘immediate ceasefire’ and wanted the Security Council to order it, so it probably doesn’t go so far as some other council members would like,” Bays added.

“The second thing in this resolution I think is very significant is the US issuing this warning to Israel not to launch a ground offensive into Rafah.”

Despite reports of a growing divide between United States President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the US has continued to finance and send Israel weapons for its assault on Gaza.
