Mariana Sahakian, a prominent figure in Lebanese table tennis, is preparing for her second Olympic Games in Paris.

In an exclusive interview with This is Beirut three days before the start of the competitions, Sahakian shares her aspirations, Olympic experience, and plans to inspire the next generation of Lebanese athletes.

What inspired you to play table tennis and pursue a career in this sport?

I started playing table tennis at the age of six, inspired by my father, who was a player and champion in Armenia.

His passion for the sport sparked mine, and I began training with him. With his insightful guidance, I developed my skills and became a champion. Those formative years of training and shared victories with my father made me realize that I wanted to dedicate my life to being an athlete.

How do you feel about representing Lebanon on the world’s biggest sports stage, and what are your expectations for these Olympic Games?

Representing Lebanon on the world’s biggest sports stage for the second time fills me with pride and gratitude. I feel extremely fortunate to have this opportunity once again.

My expectations for these Olympic Games are to win some matches and make Lebanon proud of my results. I am determined to give my best and aim for victory, hoping to honor my country with my performance.

What challenges have you faced as a table tennis player in Lebanon, and how have you overcome them?

I have not faced many challenges as a table tennis player in Lebanon because I always strive to be the best in my career.

My focus and determination have helped me maintain my position as number one. By constantly working hard and staying committed to my training, I have been able to overcome the obstacles that have come my way and continue moving forward.

This is your second participation in the Olympic Games. How do you plan to use your Olympic experience to inspire and develop the sport in Lebanon after your participation?

For my second participation in the Olympic Games, I plan to use my experience to inspire and develop the sport in Lebanon by encouraging and supporting young players.

My goal is to motivate them to stay dedicated to the sport and never give up. We have many young talents who have the potential to follow in my footsteps and carry the Lebanese flag in the future.

By sharing my journey and the lessons I have learned, I hope to help them achieve their own dreams and reach great success in table tennis.

When does your journey to the Paris Olympic Games begin?

My journey to the Paris Olympic Games will begin on July 26, with my competition starting the following day, on the 27th.

I am excited and ready to take on this challenge, representing Lebanon and aiming for my best performance.

What would you like to say to This is Beirut readers who dream of participating in the Olympic Games one day?

To all players and athletes, pursue your dreams – it is never too late to start anything. Work hard, believe in yourself, and you will reach the top.

Stay motivated, no matter the circumstances you face. Believe in yourself, and you can achieve your goals. Keep moving forward, and one day, you might find yourself on the Olympic stage.
