Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati reiterated on Monday Lebanon’s commitment to the international community’s call for a ceasefire and the full implementation of UN Resolution 1701.
Speaking from Ain al-Tineh after meeting with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Mikati emphasized that Lebanon is prepared to deploy the Lebanese Army to the southern border once a ceasefire is secured.
Mikati highlighted Lebanon’s alignment with the call for a ceasefire made by the United States, several European countries, and Arab nations, affirming Lebanon’s official support for the points raised in the international statement.
He stated, “We are prepared to implement Resolution 1701 and secure a ceasefire, alongside deploying the Army to the south.”
In a significant political development, Mikati announced that Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri assured him that following the ceasefire, an electoral parliamentary session would be convened to elect a consensus president.
Mikati emphasized that this president will be a unifying figure, not a “challenge” candidate, signaling a potential resolution to Lebanon’s prolonged presidential deadlock.
The statements come as international diplomatic efforts led by France, Qatar, and Egypt continue to work towards stabilizing the region and preventing further escalation of the conflict.
