Several Lebanese political figures mourned the death of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, killed on Friday in the Israeli strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs.
Among them former president and Free Patriotic Movement chief Michel Aoun, former Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt and the leaders of the Marada Movement and Lebanese Democratic Party, Sleiman Frangieh and Talal Arslan, respectively.
Druze leader Walid Jumblatt extended his “condolences to Hezbollah and its supporters” on his personal X account, adding, “I honor the souls of the innocent civilians.”
For his part, Former Lebanese prime minister Saad Hariri condemned the killing of Nasrallah, calling it a “cowardly act.”
“The assassination of Hassan Nasrallah has plunged Lebanon and the region into a new phase of violence,” he said on his X account.
Hariri’s father and former PM Rafik Hariri was killed by Hezbollah in a 2005 bombing, according to a UN-backed special tribunal.
Hariri pointed out that “we disagreed greatly with the late Nasrallah and his party and rarely saw eye to eye, but Lebanon was a shelter for all.”
Hariri affirmed that “our unity is essential in these difficult times. Lebanon must come before parties, sects and interests. Alleviating the suffering of our people is a national priority. Preserving Lebanon as a home for all can only be achieved through collective unity. We must rise above differences to guide our country to safety,” he added.
Moreover, former minister Wiam Wahab indirectly accused Iran of “plotting” against Nasrallah and said, “Because you truly believed in the cause, both Arabs and non-Arabs conspired against you.”
