Lebanon will file a complaint against Israel before the UN Security Council following the Hebrew state’s series of attacks on residential areas around the city of Baalbeck and in neighboring villages, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

“In accordance with the directives of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdallah Bou Habib, Lebanon’s permanent representation in the United Nations was instructed to file a complaint before the Security Council,” the statement said.

The move comes in response to a series of what are considered “the most severe Israeli attacks on March 11 and 12, 2024, targeting civilians in residential areas around the city of Baalbeck and neighboring villages, resulting in civilian casualties and injuries.”

The complaint highlighted the escalation in areas far from the southern Lebanese border, which signals Israel’s intention to widen the conflict, potentially dragging the entire region into a war.

“This escalation might evolve into a regional conflict, sought after by the Israeli government as a lifeline to escape its internal crisis,” the statement said, adding, “In light of these events, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the international community to press Israel to stop its ongoing, escalating assaults.”

It also reiterated the call for UN Security Council members to collectively condemn the Israeli attacks against Lebanon and secure the full implementation of Resolution 1701 to achieve lasting stability and peace along the southern Lebanese border.
