The Japanese authorities have pledged their support for the Lebanese Army through an agreement on an “emergency support project for the Lebanese Armed Forces that includes enhancing health services and implementing essential works.”

The agreement, signed on Tuesday at a meeting in Yarzeh, was attended by the Commander-in-Chief of the Army, General Joseph Aoun, the Japanese Ambassador to Lebanon, Magoshi Masayuki, and the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Joanna Wronecka.

According to the document, Japanese authorities “will provide a solar energy system for the two Army Command clinics in the Mount Lebanon region, with implementation to be overseen by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).”

The primary objective of the project is to enhance “the army’s capacity to deliver healthcare to its members through renewable energy projects” in these circumstances of exceptional crisis.

Following the meeting, General Joseph Aoun expressed his “profound thanks to the Japanese authorities and people for this project,” praising the initiative “which aims to assist the military institution.” He also highlighted that “the Lebanese Armed Forces have recently adopted alternative energies to conserve fuel and safeguard the environment.”

“It is thanks to the continued support of friendly countries, armies and nations that the Armed Forces remain prepared and capable of facing all challenges,” General Aoun added.

Ambassador Magoshi Masayuki emphasized that “despite the considerable burdens placed upon it, the army remains the constant guarantor of Lebanon’s unity and security.” He added that “it is crucial to support the army in fulfilling its mission of maintaining security and stability in Lebanon.”

UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Joanna Wronecka also underscored that “the project aims to address the humanitarian needs of the regular forces, improving and developing their capabilities,” a point reiterated by the UNOPS representative.
