In accordance with the directives of the caretaker Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign affairs Abdallah Bou Habib instructed Lebanon’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations to file a complaint on January 4, 2024 before the United Nations Security Council following Israel’s attack on a residential area in the southern suburb of Beirut.

The complaint highlighted that this assault represents a most dangerous escalation, the first of its kind since 2006. It targeted a densely populated residential area in Beirut’s southern suburb, constituting a blatant Israeli violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, its citizens and civilian aviation. The act is deeply concerning as it could lead to an expansion of the conflict and destabilize regional peace and security, the complaint read.

Lebanon reiterated its call upon the UN Security Council to condemn this attack, exert pressure on Israel to cease escalation, and take all necessary measures to halt Israeli aggressions against its lands and people, which is crucial to preventing the exacerbation of the conflict and the region from being drawn into an extensive and devastating war that would be challenging to contain.
