The leader of the Lebanese Forces (FL), Samir Geagea, strongly denounced Monday’s announcement, by Hamas’ Lebanon branch, of the creation of a new group called the “Al-Aqsa Flood Vanguards,” whose mission is to “liberate Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.”
“Such a declaration is unacceptable, both in form and in substance,” insisted the head of LF on Wednesday, adding that the move “undermines Lebanese sovereignty and, once again, damages relations between the Lebanese and the Palestinians.” According to him, “it is obvious that Hamas and other organizations based in Lebanon are subject to the commands and decisions of Hezbollah” and that “it is impossible for Hamas to undertake military actions from Lebanese territory without the knowledge and approval of the (pro-Iranian) party.” He expressed surprise at the reaction of the government, and more specifically of caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, as well as caretaker Ministers of Defense and Interior, “who have not taken a firm stance on this matter, at a time when the Cabinet is obliged to put pressure on Hezbollah to stop this ‘charade.'”
In this context, he recalled the dialogue sessions held in 2006, with the personal participation of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, in which, among other things, the need to disarm Palestinians outside and inside the camps was discussed, an element that Hezbollah seems to have bypassed, particularly after announcing the creation of the “Al-Aqsa Flood Vanguards.”
