Lebanese Forces (LF) leader Samir Geagea has once again criticized Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) leader Gebran Bassil, alleging that Bassil aims to remove army commander Joseph Aoun for two reasons.

Firstly, Geagea asserts that General Aoun has effectively strengthened the military institution, preventing Bassil from interfering in its affairs, particularly regarding appointments. Geagea emphasized that there is no political disagreement between the two leaders, as General Aoun does not involve himself in political matters or take political stances.

Secondly, Geagea suggests that Bassil fears competition from the Commander-in-Chief of the army, especially considering the significant support General Aoun commands among the party’s followers. Geagea criticized Bassil for what he perceives as constant contradictions in his statements. He recalled instances where Bassil claimed that, in the absence of a President of the Republic, the government cannot make appointments, but now seems to advocate for such appointments, including that of the Commander-in-Chief of the army.

Geagea concluded that Bassil’s actions are driven by his “love for power,” pointing out what he sees as inconsistencies in Bassil’s positions on the government’s role and appointments.
