Minister of Interior Bassam Mawlawi, addressing the Syrian displacement crisis in Lebanon, underscored that the situation is no longer tenable and poses a threat to Lebanon’s demographics and identity.

He emphasized the need for the Syrian Refugee Commission to no longer function independently of Lebanese authorities and laws, particularly in relation to the transfer of the refugee database to the General Security. He questioned the feasibility of protecting Syrian refugees in Lebanon, stating, “How can you demand that we protect Syrian refugees in Lebanon in the absence of their data?”

Furthermore, Mawlawi called for the international community to formulate a clear plan for refugee repatriation. He highlighted the importance of enforcing the law uniformly for all individuals on Lebanese soil and advocated for the removal of violations in municipalities while safeguarding public properties.

Mawlawi acknowledged the significance of municipalities in filling gaps in state functions and encouraged them to continue contributing to development and modernization. He stressed the need to reassess municipal revenues, especially given the depreciation of the Lebanese pound against the dollar, and called for additional funds to support municipalities.

In the context of politics, Mawlawi expressed appreciation for the efforts of security and military forces in maintaining security and stability in collaboration with the Lebanese army. He called for cooperation to address crises and protect the nation.
