With the start of the new judicial year on Monday, September 18, and despite the deplorable situation currently prevailing at the Justice palace, several magistrates are resuming their work, pushing ahead with the most urgent legal proceedings. Not all cases have been forgotten, including that between caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, and caretaker Minister of Energy, Walid Fayad. “The investigation is ongoing,” a source close to the case says.

On Tuesday, Fayad appeared at a hearing before the General Financial Prosecutor, Ali Ibrahim, who has been in charge of the case since Mikati requested, at the beginning of the month, the initiation of a judicial note against the Minister. What prompted this request are a set of suspected violations and overruns in connection with the signing of a diesel oil supply contract between the Ministry and the Emirati company Coral Energy DMCC, which was ultimately canceled after a tug-of-war between Mikati and Fayad.
