The Beirut and Mount Lebanon Water Establishment (EBML) explained on Tuesday that the main reason for the drop in water supply, which has been affecting residents of the Achrafieh region and certain districts of the Lebanese capital for over a month, is the almost permanent power cuts, which have brought the main Dbayeh water pumping station to a standstill. Supplied by a direct medium-voltage line from EDL, the Dbayeh station cannot operate with generators.

EBML also reported in a press release a “malfunction of the artesian wells supplying Mechref, which caused the interruption of water distribution in Bourj Brajneh and Hay el-Selloum, in the southern suburbs of Beirut.” The water board hopes that EDL teams would complete the repairs as soon as possible.

The water board is thus endeavoring to “solve the problem with the limited means at its disposal, as donors are unable to provide the necessary support to do so,” reads the press release.

This statement comes after the requests of the residents of Achrafieh who, upon being forced to buy water (the price of a reservoir is $40), called on the Dbayeh Water Board to intervene.
