The Renewal parliamentary bloc, consisting of MPs Fouad Makhzoumi, Michel Moawad, Ashraf Rifi, and Adib Abdel Massih, has issued a formal inquiry to the Lebanese government regarding the forensic audit of the Banque du Liban’s accounts. This inquiry seeks answers and accountability for financial misconduct revealed in the audit report.

In accordance with parliamentary rules, the Renewal Bloc served a series of critical questions to the government on Tuesday.

The questions covered a range of concerns, including the roles of the Central Bank’s Board, the government’s representative in the Central Bank, and the Minister of Finance in overseeing the financial activities of the institution. The Renewal Bloc also demanded clarity on the government’s plan to establish genuine oversight mechanisms for reform and the recovery of misappropriated funds.

Furthermore, the bloc inquired about the omission of financial activities between 2021 and 2023 from the audit report and urged the government to pursue legal action based on the report’s findings. They also highlighted the need for a comprehensive review of the report, given the Central Bank’s reluctance to provide necessary documents and information.

MP Michel Moawad emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “The Alvarez report has revealed a financial crime against the Lebanese people, leading to the theft of depositors’ funds.”

On his part, MP Ashraf Rifi echoed these sentiments, emphasizing, “Theft of depositors’ and employees’ money has unacceptable repercussions. The military personnel have no medicine or fuel. That’s why we insist on the questions we have directed to the government.”
