MP Samy Gemayel sent a written inquiry on Wednesday to the Lebanese government concerning the fate of the missing or detained Lebanese in Syria.

In the note sent on behalf of the Kataeb MPs, Gemayel condemned Lebanon’s position in abstaining from voting on the UN resolution aimed at creating an independent international body to determine the fate and whereabouts of all persons missing, detained, or kidnapped in Syria.

The Kataeb MP asked what practical steps the Lebanese government will take to ensure that the mechanism being prepared by the UN includes Lebanese individuals missing in Syria after 2011, as well as the Lebanese abducted by Syrian forces and their allies before 2011 (the beginning of the Syrian war), before the 80-day statute of limitations set out in the General Assembly resolution.

Gemayel also requested to know what measures the Lebanese Cabinet will take to ensure proper representation of the victims and their families.

The government must respond within 15 days. Failure to do so will result in moving the question into an interrogation in an open parliamentary session, as stipulated by the Constitution.
