The German justice announced on May 10 the arrest of two alleged members of Hezbollah on its territory.

Hassan M., a Lebanese citizen, and Abdul-Latif W. who holds a German nationality along with his Lebanese citizenship, are suspected of proselytizing and activism on behalf of the pro-Iranian organization. They were arrested near Cuxhaven in the north part of the country, according to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, quoted by the French press agency, AFP.

Abdul-Latif W. and Hassan M. joined the ranks of Hezbollah in 2004 and 2016 respectively. They are suspected of having “acted as representatives of Hezbollah in the Bremen region”, in particular having “militated and spoken on behalf of the movement” as well as having “supported the interventions of preachers and organizations in Germany close to Hezbollah”, according to the Prosecution.

The two men will be brought during the day before a judge who must rule on a request from the Prosecution for placement in pre-trial detention.

Hezbollah is considered a terrorist organization by many countries, including the United States, those of the European Union, the United Kingdom and a majority of Arab League member states.

In Germany, its political wing, which regularly organized anti-Israel protests, was long allowed, before being banned in 2020.
