He is considered by Israeli intelligence services to be the mastermind behind attacks against Israel. At 58 years old, Mohammed Deif was reportedly targeted by Israel during the attack near Khan Younes.

Mohammed Deif, a high-ranking leader of Hamas’ military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, has played a crucial role in the organization’s operations for decades. Born in Khan Younes in the Gaza Strip around 1965, Deif joined Hamas in the late 1980s. He quickly rose through the ranks due to his strategic acumen.

Initially born as Mohammed Diab Ibrahim al-Masri, he earned the name “Deif,” meaning “guest” in Arabic, because he never sleeps in the same place each night to avoid targeted strikes. This strategy has allowed him to escape seven assassination attempts. Between 2002 and 2006, he lost his arm, eye, and legs.

He rose in the hierarchy of Hamas’ armed wing, becoming the leader of the Al-Qassam Brigades in 2002.

In a message relayed by Israeli media, he claimed to have launched 5,000 rockets against Israeli territory. The leader of the Al-Qassam Brigades, in his message, justifies these attacks by citing the blockade of Gaza imposed by Israel since 2006.

Deif has been instrumental in orchestrating numerous attacks against Israeli targets and has survived several assassination attempts. His ability to evade capture and continue operations despite injuries and losses has made him a symbol for Hamas.

Under Deif’s leadership, the Al-Qassam Brigades have developed sophisticated tactics and weaponry, and he is believed to be at the origin of the construction of Gaza’s tunnels. Despite his high profile, Deif remains a mysterious and shadowy figure, rarely making public appearances or statements, which adds to his enigmatic reputation.
