Hamas has reportedly accepted a new American initiative aimed at establishing a ceasefire with Israel in Gaza, according to a source within the organization quoted by Al Arabiya on Tuesday.

“We have accepted a modified American initiative that provides for a ceasefire and the gradual return of displaced persons” inside the enclave, the source told the Saudi media outlet.

This initiative will include the release of children, women and elderly people detained by Hamas since October 7, the source added.

According to the source, a delegation from the movement will travel in the next few days to Cairo, where the last rounds of negotiations at this level took place, to discuss the details of the agreement and begin implementing it.

These comments echo those made by CIA Director William Burns earlier in the day, when he said that a ceasefire agreement in Gaza was still possible.
