An Israeli aircraft bombed on Saturday night the main Marjayoun power station, causing “serious damage,” according to a statement issued by Électricité du Liban (EDL). This station supplies electricity to around 40 villages in the south of the country.
The public electricity supplier reported that, during Israel’s latest series of attacks on its networks and facilities, the Marjayoun station was targeted by several shells which caused serious damage affecting transformers, cells and overhead voltage networks. The station, which connects the regions and supplies power directly to them, is now out of service.
Contacted by This is Beirut, EDL’s management assured us that they were waiting for the army to send technicians to the site to assess the damage and its cost, so that appropriate measures could be taken. Given the state of EDL’s finances, the question arises: If the damage is very extensive, will the public provider be able to cover the cost of repairs?
