The League of Civil Servants announced on Saturday that it would observe a general strike from Tuesday, January 30 to February 9 inclusive. Calls for sit-in protests will also be issued.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the League attacked the “salvation” government which continues to ignore the rights of all low-income public sector workers, despite knowing that the situation in which they live continues to deteriorate. Believing that the government wants to “finish off public administration and its employees”, the League rejected the injustice suffered by civil servants and denounced attempts to deprive them of their basic rights.

It should be noted that the budget for fiscal 2024, approved by Parliament on Friday, does not provide salary increases for civil servants, but for “bonuses” to be drawn from the Treasury reserve.

In this regard, the League criticized the budget for fiscal 2024, which has “increased taxes on wages, while exempting the wealthy.” It considered that it “continues to legalize tax and customs evasion” and that it will contribute to accentuating the stagnation of the economy.

The League also denounced “the illegal recruitment campaign in many ministries and agencies, and the waste of money for the benefit of these beneficiaries and other nominees, instead of restoring the rights of civil servants in all categories and enabling them to carry out their duties.”

In this context, the League called for “the rights of civil servants to be restored,” asserting that “it is no longer possible to accept anything less than the true value of salaries.” “It is no longer possible to be remunerated according to an exchange rate of 1,500 pounds and to pay state services and its exorbitant fees at the rate of 89,500 pounds”, reads the text.
