Lebanon’s electricity company, EDL, will be increasing power supply by two hours a day as of October 1 in several Beirut neighborhoods where exits have been checked and infractions removed by EDL teams.

In a press release issued on Monday, EDL said that the exits that have recently been inspected are: Chamoun, Hanawi, Sassine, Hayek, Azouri, Jupiter, Kataëb, Nabil, Sukleen,Tabak, Majli, Mayasi and Fahd.

These exits supply the following neighborhoods: Achrafieh, Sagesse, Al-Rmeil, Medawar, Gemmayzeh, Al-Bachoura, Karantine, Al-Nahr, Al-Manara, Ras Beirut and Commodore, which will benefit from two extra hours of electricity.

The public power supplier also announced that the first phase of the plan to dismantle encroachments on the electricity grid, carried out in coordination with the security forces, has been completed and has shown that the ratio between the number of infringements and that of subscribers is less than 10%.

The first phase of the emergency plan for the electricity sector involved the inspection of 216 main conduits (out of a total of 800) in the administrative perimeter of Beirut and areas supplied by the Litani River, in addition to all points supplying public sector buildings in all Lebanese governorates.

EDL specified that this increase in power supply remains in force even if the number of hours of supply is increased at a later date, unless there is a total blackout throughout Lebanon.

On March 6, EDL began the first phase of dismantling encroachments on the electricity network, in coordination with the Internal Security Forces and the army. This phase of the emergency plan for the electricity sector is in line with the requirements of donor countries and will help secure EDL’s financial equilibrium and redistribute electricity equitably to all Lebanese regions.
