Jennifer Lopez’s Atlas, a recently released Netflix original, blends sci-fi and emotional depth. Directed by Brad Peyton, it follows a misanthropic analyst battling AI on a distant planet.

Jennifer Lopez’s new Netflix original movie, Atlas, has captivated viewers despite receiving mixed reviews. Directed by Brad Peyton, known for Rampage and San Andreas, Atlas tells a futuristic tale of Atlas Shepherd, a tech analyst haunted by her past and mistrustful of artificial intelligence.

The film explores the idea of artificial intelligence taking over the world but with a unique focus on trust and human connections. The story centers on Atlas Shepherd, played by Jennifer Lopez, who has lived a guilt-ridden life since the death of her scientist mother who invented an AI robot named Harlan, portrayed by Simu Liu, which becomes self-aware and leads a catastrophic AI revolt, killing millions. Escaping to another planet, Harlan resurfaces 28 years later with plans to annihilate Earth, prompting Atlas to join a mission to destroy the AI before it’s too late.

Jennifer Lopez’s character, a government analyst, is thrust into a high-tech world on a distant planet to confront her oldest enemy: the robot warrior who upended her life. Atlas Shepherd is a character who has shut out the world around her. She doesn’t trust anyone and avoids AI. However, during her mission, she is forced to confront her fear of technology by allying with it.

Written by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite, Atlas is a galaxy-spanning adventure. The narrative is told through the lens of a woman learning to trust again after trauma. It highlights the importance of deep, meaningful relationships and the necessity of allowing others into our lives. Thus, the sci-fi action movie holds a core story about friendship and love about two beings connecting under disastrous circumstances, teaching each other to be more human. The film features a high-energy soundtrack by the German group Meute, complementing the visually stunning and pyrotechnic-filled action scenes. The cast includes Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown and Gregory James Cohan, who deliver strong performances alongside Lopez.

Despite its flaws, Atlas manages to be surprisingly entertaining. Sci-fi fans, especially those familiar with the Titanfall game series, might find the movie’s take on AI uprising intriguing. Atlas’ release on Netflix has already generated significant interest, proving that Jennifer Lopez’s star power and the film’s engaging premise are enough to draw audiences. While the reviews may be mixed, the movie’s blend of action, emotion and high-tech adventure makes it a worthwhile watch for genre enthusiasts.
