In a radiant tribute to International Women’s Day, the Beirut Art Film Festival (BAFF), in collaboration with La Bibliothèque Orientale de l’Université Saint-Joseph, is hosting a captivating evening dedicated to the achievements of women in the realm of photography. This enlightening event, scheduled for Monday, March 4, 2024, promises to offer a mosaic of perspectives on the female gaze, transcending borders and narratives through the lens of photography.

BAFF’s celebration of women in photography will start at 6:00 PM with a session titled The Only Woman, featuring Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker, producer and author, Immy Humes, hailing from New York City. She will delve into the stories and group portraits of remarkable women, a journey that spans over a century and encompasses more than 20 countries, as depicted in her book, also titled The Only Woman. Following her, Dr. Ghada Waked, a well-known art historian from Beirut, will share an array of photographs showcasing the remarkable women of Lebanon, thus weaving a local thread into the global tapestry of female achievement.

At 7:00 PM, the focus will shift to An All-Women Talk, a panel discussion that promises to invert traditional narratives by having 11 female photographers discuss male counterparts in their field. Moderated by Dr. Ghada Waked, the panel will include Christina Assi, Myriam Boulos, Chaza Charafeddine, Danièle Chikhani, Batoul Faour, Ghina Fleyfel, Joumana Jamhouri, Houda Kassatly, Aline Manoukian, Ieva Saudargaitė Douaihi and Tanya Traboulsi. This 90-minute session aims to shed light on the unique insights and challenges faced by women in photography, fostering a dialogue that transcends gender biases and celebrates the artistic merits of the medium.

Set against the historic backdrop of La Bibliothèque Orientale de l’USJ, in the Amphithéâtre Leïla Turquie in Beirut, this event is a deep contemplation on women’s role in photography. Conducted in both English and French, the sessions offer an inclusive space for dialogue and reflection, underlining the festival’s commitment to cultural diversity and academic excellence.

Admission to this exceptional evening is complimentary, with mandatory email booking, a testament to BAFF’s dedication to making art and academic discourse accessible to all.
