Esteemed Lebanese artist Jamil Molaeb is set to captivate art enthusiasts with his latest exhibition, Jamilat, running from January 17 to February 23, 2024, at Galerie Janine Rubeiz. Born in Lebanon in 1948, Molaeb, a master’s graduate from Pratt Institute in New York and a PhD holder in Art Education from the University of Ohio, returns to his artistic roots with a profound exploration of the human form.
Molaeb, a former professor at the Lebanese American University and Lebanese University, has been a prominent figure in the art scene since 1966, showcasing his work across Lebanon, Algeria, Switzerland and the United States. Jamilat represents a continuation of his deep-seated fascination with the human body, viewed as the source of all art, mythology and sacredness.
In this series, Molaeb delves into the nuances of the human physique, exploring its beauty and the marks of time. Each piece is a diary entry, reflecting the evolution of the physical and spiritual self. Molaeb’s approach transcends traditional boundaries, integrating novel materials and revealing new dimensions of the human form.
His journey in art has been marked by numerous exhibitions, including memorable shows at Dar el Fan, such as Le Mal-Être and Aquarelles et Gouaches, and a series of exhibitions with Galerie Janine Rubeiz. Molaeb’s contributions extend to sculpture symposia, significant art fairs like Abu Dhabi Art and Art Dubai, and his accolades include the 3rd prize of Sculpture at the 7th Salon d’Automne organized by the Sursock Museum.
Molaeb’s works, featured in public and private collections worldwide, including The World Bank in Washington, DC, have been sold at international auctions. His artistic legacy is chronicled in five published books, the most recent being New York – New York, 1984-2015.
