The Israeli Air Force received its first Boeing KC-46 “Gideon” aerial refueling and transport aircraft on Wednesday during a ceremony held at Nevatim Airbase, marking a major milestone in Israel’s long-range military capabilities and strategic air power modernization.
The ceremony was attended by IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir and Israeli Air Force Commander Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar, as the aircraft joined the Air Force’s newly established refueling squadron. The “Gideon” is the first of six KC-46 aircraft purchased by Israel through the Ministry of Defense procurement mission in the United States as part of a broader military expansion program.
During the event, senior Israeli military officials highlighted the aircraft’s strategic significance amid ongoing regional tensions. Zamir stated that Iran’s military capabilities and nuclear ambitions had suffered major setbacks, while Bar emphasized the role of aerial refueling capabilities in enabling long-range Israeli operations across multiple fronts, including Iran, Lebanon, and Gaza.
The new aircraft is expected to gradually replace Israel’s aging fleet of modified Boeing 707 tankers, some of which have remained operational for decades. Analysts view the acquisition as a significant enhancement to Israel’s ability to conduct sustained long-range missions independently and with greater operational flexibility.
KC-46 “Gideon” Capabilities
Built by Boeing, the KC-46 Pegasus is considered to be one of the most advanced multi-role aerial refueling aircraft currently in service. Based on the Boeing 767 platform, the aircraft combines strategic airlift, aerial refueling, cargo transport, and medical evacuation capabilities in a single platform.
The aircraft can carry more than 96,000 kilograms (212,000 pounds) of fuel and refuel fighter jets and allied aircraft mid-air using both boom and hose-and-drogue systems. According to Boeing, the KC-46 is capable of supporting a wide range of combat aircraft including F-15s, F-16s, F-35s, and other NATO-compatible platforms.
In addition to its refueling mission, the aircraft can transport cargo pallets, military personnel, or wounded soldiers during emergency operations. The platform also includes advanced avionics, encrypted communications systems, defensive countermeasures, and enhanced survivability systems designed for operations in contested environments.
Israeli defense officials believe the KC-46 fleet will significantly extend the operational range and endurance of the Israeli Air Force, particularly for long-distance missions requiring sustained air presence. The aircraft is also expected to strengthen Israel’s ability to operate simultaneously across several regional theaters while reducing dependence on external logistical support.
