Panic has swept through the southern suburbs of Beirut on Thursday as residents fled in droves following a large-scale evacuation order by the Israeli military.

Heavy traffic congestion quickly paralyzed roads leading out of the densely populated districts of Haret Hreik, Burj al-Barajneh, Hadath, and Jnah, as thousands attempted to flee the area heading east and north. The road leading to Beirut International Airport (BIA) was also heavily congested.

Gridlock extended beyond the south, with traffic on the Sin el-Fil road toward the eastern suburbs of Horsh Tabet coming to a near standstill.

The evacuation warning was issued by the Israeli army’s Arabic-language spokesperson, Avichay Adraee.
