According to a report by Axios, militants from several Kurdish Iranian factions are preparing for a possible ground offensive against Iran’s regime in the northwestern part of the country.
Several Kurdish Iranian militant factions are preparing for a possible ground offensive against Iran’s regime in the country’s northwestern regions, according to U.S. and Israeli officials and a senior official from one of the groups.
The preparations come as the U.S.-Israeli bombing campaign against Iran continues, with officials suggesting a coordinated Kurdish ground operation could increase pressure on Tehran and potentially trigger wider unrest inside the country.
Six days before the war began, five dissident Kurdish Iranian groups based in Iraq announced the formation of the Coalition of Political Forces of Iranian Kurdistan to confront the Iranian regime. The factions, which have thousands of fighters along the Iran-Iraq border, have reportedly moved hundreds of members from camps in Iraq into Iran in recent weeks as part of preparations for a potential attack.
Sources familiar with the discussions said the Kurdish militias are backed by the CIA and Israel’s Mossad. The reported plan would involve seizing territory in Iran’s Kurdish region to challenge the regime and potentially inspire a broader uprising.
However, the White House said President Donald Trump has not approved any plan to support an offensive by Kurdish militias. Kurdish factions also denied Wednesday that an operation had begun, with a source saying they are waiting for a U.S. “green light.”
Following the reports, Iran said Thursday it had targeted headquarters of Kurdish forces in Iraqi Kurdistan, according to Iranian state media, following strikes on Kurdish regions in both Iran and Iraq.
"We targeted the headquarters of Kurdish groups opposed to the revolution in Iraqi Kurdistan with three missiles," Iran's official IRNA news agency posted on Telegram, quoting a military statement.
The developments have raised regional concerns. Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi spoke with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, who stressed that Iraq would not allow its territory to be used to launch attacks against Iran.
