President Joseph Aoun asserted on Tuesday that the Cabinet’s decision to prohibit illegal military and security activities is a sovereign and final measure that “cannot be reversed,” in reference to Hezbollah’s rocket fire toward Israel.
Speaking during a meeting with the Quintet Committee, Aoun reiterated that the government’s decision, adopted Monday, to preserve the exclusive right of the Lebanese state to determine matters of peace and war is also irreversible. He stressed that Monday’s rockets were launched from outside the southern Litani area, where the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) are deployed and “fully performing their role” in that region and across other parts of the country.
The Quintet delegation includes the ambassadors of the United States, Saudi Arabia, France, Qatar and Egypt. Before them, Aoun reaffirmed that the Council of Ministers had tasked the army and security forces with implementing the decision throughout Lebanon.
On Monday, during an extraordinary session at Baabda Palace, the Cabinet adopted sweeping measures aimed at asserting state authority over armed activity on Lebanese territory following renewed rocket launches from the south and rising regional tensions. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced that the government formally declared its “absolute rejection of any military actions launched from Lebanese territory,” stating that Hezbollah’s military activities are now considered outside the framework of the law.
Following the meeting, Egyptian Ambassador Alaa Moussa told reporters that discussions focused on recent developments and Lebanon’s approach to containing the situation. He said talks also addressed the role of the Quintet Committee, efforts to prevent further damage to Lebanon, and the upcoming responsibilities of the Lebanese army and the measures required by the state in the next phase.
