President Donald Trump stated that he is weighing military action in Iran during the Governors breakfast on Friday.
When asked whether he is considering a limited strike on Iran, he said “I think I can say that I am considering it.”
According to Reuters, the U.S. military positioning necessary for carrying out strikes in Iran is mostly in place.
The USS Gerald Ford aircraft carrier entered into the Mediterranean basin on Friday being repositioned from the Caribbean where it was stationed during the January U.S. operations in Venezuela. The vessel will likely be stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean and is the second US carrier to be placed in the Middle East.
Earlier this week, over 50 U.S. combat aircraft were moved to the Middle East as well as part of the broader buildup.
The accumulation of U.S. assets in the region is the largest since the buildup to the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, demonstrating that U.S. officials remain serious about the option of military action.
What is unknown is what the extent of U.S. operations in Iran would entail, whether it targets specific individuals, pushes for regime change, or attacks key military, nuclear, and strategic sites.
