A delegation from the Lebanese Forces party visited Damascus to meet with Syrian officials on Tuesday, Lebanese officials confirmed.
The LF leader Samir Geagea and the Minister of Telecommunications Charles al-Hajj briefed President Joseph Aoun on the visit, wanting to emphasize that Syria and Lebanon have entered a new chapter in their relations.
They commented that Syria is now focusing on the Syrian people, just like Lebanon, without expansionist goals.
"Damascus has returned to being the capital of a state friendly to Lebanon, and the relationship is now viewed as one between two states," the delegation expressed.
Syria did not formally recognize Lebanon as a sovereign independent state until 2008, seeing the country as an extension of Syria's realm.
With the history of Syrian occupation of peripheral Lebanese land, ending in 2005, and the Bashar al-Assad regime's alliance and support for Hezbollah, the Lebanese Forces party has historically been wary of ties with Damascus.
LF officials stated that the visit was normal, and developing a relationship with the new Syrian government is a "natural occurrence from now on," explaining that Syria is "no longer the country we all knew sixty years ago.
