Iran Summons EU Ambassadors After IRGC Terrorist Designation

Iran announced on Monday that it had summoned European ambassadors based in Tehran in response to the European Union’s decision to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said that on Sunday and Monday, representatives of all EU member states with embassies in Tehran were called in for meetings at the Foreign Ministry. The move, he stressed, was a direct reaction to what Iran considers a hostile and unjustified decision by the bloc.

Describing the summons as only an initial step, Baqaei warned that “this is the smallest of measures,” adding that further actions would be announced. He made the remarks during a Foreign Ministry press briefing, underscoring that Tehran is weighing additional responses as tensions with Europe escalate.
