A car-ramming and stabbing attack by a Palestinian man left two people dead in northern Israel on Friday, police said.

The assailant killed a 68-year-old pedestrian in a hit-and-run and fatally stabbed a 19-year-old woman near a bus stop. The assailant was shot and injured by a civilian passerby while fleeing towards Afula. He was taken to a hospital in moderate condition.

The assailant is a Palestinian from the occupied West Bank, according to police.

Both of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, Israel’s rescue services said. Two others suffered ‍mild injuries, including a teenager.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz ‍said he had instructed the military to respond forcefully in the West Bank town of Qabaitya, where he said the assailant came from, ‌to thwart any further attacks. His office also warned that anyone who assists or provides backing to terrorism “will pay the full price.”

The Israeli military confirmed it is "preparing ‍for an operation" in the area.
