U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon, Michel Issa, announced that discussions are underway for a new visit by the Lebanese army chief, Rodolphe Haykal, to Washington. The announcement follows his Monday meeting with Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi.
The army commander’s visit had previously been canceled on November 18 due to a statement issued by the Lebanese army regarding tensions along the border with Israel. Confident that the visit could take place this time, Ambassador Issa said, “The situation is becoming clearer, but nothing is confirmed yet.”
Regarding the “mechanism” meetings, intended to facilitate dialogue between the parties involved in the conflict, Michel Issa emphasized, “We do not expect peace at the first meeting. The parties must meet and then present their proposals.”
These remarks come shortly after the Lebanese presidency appointed former ambassador Simon Karam to the ceasefire monitoring committee, established in November 2024 to end hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel.
