The US Department of the Treasury announced the suspension of sanctions imposed on Syria under the Caesar Act, coinciding with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s visit to the White House, where he was received by US President Donald Trump.

In a statement, the Treasury specified that the suspension does not include transactions involving Russia or Iran, Syria’s main allies. The measures therefore apply only to certain economic and financial activities deemed compatible with the new phase of dialogue between Washington and Damascus.

The Caesar Act, adopted in 2019, was designed to sanction any entity supporting the Syrian government or engaging in reconstruction efforts without US approval. This decision marks the first official adjustment to the U.S. sanctions regime since the law came into effect.
