The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) stated on Friday that the Israeli army dropped grenades earlier in the morning, “in close proximity to peacekeeping forces working alongside the Lebanese army to protect civilian workers” in the southern border town of Maroun al-Ras. The civilians had been clearing rubble from homes destroyed during the war.

According to the statement, the incident occurred at approximately 11:30 AM. “Peacekeepers stationed at two separate locations heard the explosion of a grenade near a digger around 500 meters from their position. Moments later, the first group spotted a drone flying overhead, followed by an explosion roughly 30 to 40 meters away. Around 20 minutes later, the second group observed another drone dropping a grenade that detonated just 20 meters above them,” the communiqué said, noting that “the Israeli army had been informed in advance of the ongoing works.”

UNIFIL warned that the strikes represented “a serious violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701,” and called on the Israeli military to “cease all attacks and allow UNIFIL to carry out its mandated tasks without obstruction.”
