Following the European decision to trigger the mechanism that could reinstate international sanctions against Iran within a month—a move set to be reviewed Friday by the UN Security Council, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-president, Kaja Kallas said Friday, “Western countries now have 30 days to find a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear crisis.”
“We are entering a new 30-day phase (…) that we must truly use to find diplomatic solutions,” she added ahead of an EU meeting in Copenhagen.
Russia
Russia warned Friday of “irreparable consequences” if new international sanctions were imposed on Iran following the announcement.
“We urgently call on them to regain reason and revise their mistaken decisions before they lead to irreparable consequences and another tragedy,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, advocating for the “restoration of constructive dialogue” among all parties involved to prevent a “new crisis” over the Iranian nuclear issue.
China
China also criticized the move by Germany, France, and the United Kingdom to trigger the mechanism that could restore international sanctions on Iran over its nuclear activities.
Launching this procedure “is not constructive and will harm the political and diplomatic process for resolving the Iranian nuclear issue,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told reporters.
