Israel announced on Monday that it would take reciprocal steps, including a phased reduction of its military presence, should the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) implement the disarmament of Hezbollah.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised what he called the “historic decision” by the Lebanese government, led by President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, to target Hezbollah’s disarmament by the end of 2025. “Israel recognizes Lebanon’s significant initiative and commends its leaders for their leadership,” Netanyahu stated on X.

According to Netanyahu, the move represents a crucial opportunity for Lebanon to restore state sovereignty, strengthen its institutions, and regain control of its armed forces, free from the influence of non-state actors.

Israel indicated it is ready to support Lebanon’s efforts to disarm Hezbollah and cooperate toward a more secure and stable future for both nations. “Now is the time for Israel and Lebanon to move forward together, focusing on the shared goal of disarmament and regional stability,” the Prime Minister added.

The announcement comes as U.S. envoy Tom Barrack visited Tel Aviv on Sunday, meeting Netanyahu and other officials to discuss compliance with the terms of the truce, officially in effect since late November 2024, as well as the U.S. “roadmap.” Barrack, along with Morgan Ortagus, is expected in Lebanon Monday evening for meetings with Presidents Aoun and Salam on Tuesday.
