President Joseph Aoun reaffirmed, on Thursday, to Arab League Deputy Secretary-General Ambassador Hossam Zaki Lebanon’s commitment to implementing the arms control resolution in a way that safeguards the interests of all Lebanese citizens. He emphasized the necessity for Israel to fulfill its obligations to create the conditions required for the full extension of Lebanese state sovereignty along its borders.
Zaki stressed that the organization stands “firmly behind Lebanon’s efforts” to restrict weapons to state control and assert authority across all its territories.
Following a meeting with President Joseph Aoun, Zaki urged international powers to press Israel to withdraw from Lebanese land and “refrain from any actions that undermine Lebanese sovereignty.”
“No one wants Lebanon to slide into undesirable consequences,” he warned, expressing hope that wisdom and a clear vision would guide efforts to restore stability and civil peace.
Moreover, Zaki underscored what he called Washington’s “special responsibility” in enforcing the ceasefire agreement, urging the United States to pressure Israel to honor its commitments.
Earlier on Thursday, Zaki had also declared that the organization fully supports Lebanon’s state authority and its efforts to extend control over all territories and restrict weapons to state institutions.
Following talks with Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi, Zaki said his visit reflects the League’s deep concern for Lebanon’s stability.
For his part, Raggi thanked Arab states for their support, stressing that the government is determined to tackle the weapons issue “with wisdom and prudence” while working to restore security, stability, and economic recovery.
The meeting, attended by Lebanon’s Ambassador to Egypt Ali Al-Halabi, also addressed the renewal of UNIFIL’s mandate and the need to preserve the UN presence in southern Lebanon.
