The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Gaza on Saturday at 19:00 GMT, following Israel’s announcement of a plan to take control of the city, several diplomatic sources told AFP on Friday.
Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, through a spokesperson, warned Israel against “a dangerous escalation” that “could worsen the already catastrophic consequences for millions of Palestinians.”
Several of the Council’s 15 member states requested the meeting, which was welcomed by the Palestinian delegation to the UN.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to order the army to take control of Gaza to “defeat” Hamas has sparked outrage worldwide. Guterres further warned it could lead to “additional forced displacements, killings, and massive destruction, worsening the unimaginable suffering of the Palestinian population in Gaza.”
