President Joseph Aoun began a two-day official visit to Algeria on Tuesday, highlighting the long-standing solidarity between the two countries and expressing Lebanon’s gratitude for Algeria’s consistent support during times of crisis.

Speaking upon his arrival at Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers, President Aoun recalled Algeria’s swift humanitarian assistance following the 2020 Beirut port explosion, its energy aid and its long-standing support in welcoming hundreds of Lebanese students to study across Algerian schools and universities.

“Algeria has generously supported Lebanon through difficult times, including its prompt aid during the Israeli war and its solidarity at the UN Security Council,” Aoun said, stressing the importance of deepening cooperation across all sectors.

The president also revealed that his visit will focus on exploring avenues to enhance economic, trade, cultural and media relations, as well as advancing cooperation in education, health and technology. “Algeria represents a strategic depth for Lebanon in the Arab and African spheres,” he added.

Aoun emphasized his optimism for the visit, stating, “I look forward to productive meetings with President Tebboune and other Algerian officials. I am confident this visit will open new horizons of cooperation and reaffirm Lebanon’s appreciation for Algeria’s support and its aspiration for deeper coordination in the service of both our peoples.”

President Aoun was accompanied by Minister Foreign Affairs Youssef Rajji, Minister of Information Paul Morcos and an official delegation. His arrival was marked by a warm reception, with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune personally welcoming him on the airport tarmac. Following a 21-gun salute and the playing of both national anthems, the two leaders reviewed a military honor guard.

The route from the airport to President Aoun’s residence was decorated with Lebanese and Algerian flags, along with banners welcoming the Lebanese delegation, a gesture underscoring the strong bilateral relationship between the two countries. The presidents later proceeded to the airport’s VIP lounge for a brief pause before Aoun made his way to his accommodation.
